Week 5: Cupcake Flowers

Hi friends!

Over the course of this learning project, one thing that has really caught my eye is the making of icing flowers. Icing flowers are something that I try so hard to recreate but I most often can’t perfect. The reason is that most icing flower tutorials require a certain consistency of icing that I don’t have time to make. Despite this, there is one flower that I find the easiest and quickest to make and that I can make perfect with minimal effort. Below is one of the videos that  I watched which eventually formed into what I did on my cupcakes today.

For the flower that I am making today, I used a Wilton #103 Petal Tip and a Wilton #2 Round Tip.

Next, I mixed my icing using Wilton gel icing colour in Violet and Golden Yellow. I got both of these from my local Bulk Barn. I found using gel dyes rather than your typical dyes mixes better, however, that is just my opinion.

First I mixed the violet colour with some icing and filled a piping bag full of the icing with the #103 tip. With this flower, you are going to keep the wide side of the tip facing you or facing the centre of the cupcake. This allows for the petal you are going to do to get thicker as you pull it towards the outer edge.

As you continue you can either choose to stop after one row of these petals or you can do a second row as you can see in the picture at the beginning of the post. To finish the flower off you will just dye some icing yellow, prepare a piping bag with the #2 tip now and fill in the middle of the flower. I hope you enjoyed learning how to make an icing flower this week! Bye. 🙂

  1. Hey Klair, I contemplated doing this icing technique when I was doing cupcakes so I found it neat that you ended up doing it. I love the video and the cupcakes turned out great! Can’t wait to see what you do for the final week!

    Klair,
These cupcakes look really cool. I have always wanted to try to make an icing flower on cupcakes but every tutorial I’ve found seemed so hard. You made this look quite easy, thanks for sharing!

  3. I have never attempted to decorate with icing, let alone baking anything at all. I think your flowers turned out wonderfully. I’m interested to know what the lengthy process is for making the other type of icing.. The kind you say has a better consistency?! Good work on your flowers nonetheless. 🙂

  4. Klair, I have never decorated cupcakes before in my life, but this post really motivated me to try this out! Your cupcakes look amazing and definitely show beautiful flowers. Do they taste as good as they look? Great job on this post! I really liked how you filmed a tutorial for the icing. Maybe next time you can do a full tutorial so we can see the whole process? Thanks!

    1. I was going to do a full tutorial but I didn’t have any friends available to get a good angle on the cupcake! I hope you try this, it’s really easy and it’s something that you can do in a small amount of time.

      1. True! Filming yourself cook can be really difficult without the right equipment or friends to film for you! I will definitely try them out in the future.
